Fight against Mafia-type organisations
It is aimed at combating organised criminal organisations known as Cosa nostra, ‘Ndrangheta, Camorra, etc.
To ensure the coordination of investigative activities over a wide range of scales and to carry out judicial police investigations into Mafia-type criminal offences, the Anti-Mafia Investigations Directorate (Dia), a specialised interagency investigative organization specializing in mafia investigations all over Italy, was set up in 1991. It enjoys a managerial, administrative and accounting autonomy and is made up of a central service, including three units and seven offices, and a peripheral service, including twelve centres and seven operational sections. It maintains and develops contacts with foreign services specializing in anti-Mafia activities.
Law no. 410/1991 provides for DIA’s assignments and relations with police forces, for both proactive and judicial investigations. DIA is charged with identifying, through a close analysis, the evolutive trends of Mafia-type criminal phenomena in order to timely orient judicial investigations towards a more effective counteraction against organised crime.
In particular, DIA deals with: proactive investigations, also in collaboration with the Public Tenders Central Monitoring Authority; judicial investigations; international co-operation.
