Space exploration kermesse to open in Lucca
Starting Monday 7th November until Thursday 10th November, more than 220 foreign delegations and representatives of major space agencies of the world are expected to attend two international meetings. A special exhibition inaugurated on Thursday 3rd November
Space exploration and earth observation missions will be the key issues explored during the international kermesse, organised by the prefecture, the province and the municipality of Lucca, to be held from Monday 7th November until Thursday 10th November in the Tuscan capital city.
Two important meetings will mark the event: the 25th CEOS Plenary Assembly (Committee on Earth Observation Satellites) and the 3rd International Conference on Space Exploration, organised by the Italian Ministry for Education, the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the European Space Agency (ESA).
From Tuesday 8th November to Wednesday 9th November, the CEOS Plenary Assembly will take place at the Real Collegio. Established in 1984 under the aegis of the G7 countries, the Committee coordinates civil space-borne observations of the Earth.
Debate topics will include, among others, the establishment of an international panel on climate change and the future role of CEOS in the global process of weather monitoring. CEOS members are made up of space agencies, national and international organizations from many countries in the world, including Italy, USA, the United Kingdom, China, France, Argentina, Brazil, the Russian Federation, Turkey and some African nations such as Nigeria and South Africa.
On November 10th, the 3rd International Conference on Space Exploration will be held at Palazzo Ducale. Following a first edition on this subject organised in Prague in 2009 and a second one in Brussels in 2010, the conference to be held in Lucca will focus on developing new strategies for space exploration and assessing principles for a common work platform.
On November 3rd, a press conference was held by ASI and ESA at S. Cristoforo church in Lucca to announce the event and to inaugurate a special exhibition entitled ‘La settimana dello spazio a Lucca’ (Space Week in Lucca).
Closing event: a concert of Puccini arias will be performed for all participants and citizens.
