International Organization for Migration (IOM) celebrates its 60th anniversary
For this special event, the leading inter-governmental organization engaged in co-operation on migration issues and assistance to migrants in need has created a dedicated website hosting large amounts of mission-related materials
International Organization for Migration (IOM) celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. Sixty years of assisting migrants worldwide, in an ever changing environment and political and social context. This is the mission of the organization, as briefly described on the home page of the website dedicated to this special event that will take place in December.
Plenty of other initiatives will mark this important anniversary inspired by the organisation motto ‘IOM-Migration for the Benefit of All’, which emphasises the close relation – as recognised by IOM constitution itself – between migration and economic, social and cultural development. They include launching of an awareness raising campaign, conferences and workshops, sports events, photography exhibitions and publications.
IOM currently has 132 members and 97 observers including 17 States and 80 global and regional IGOs and NGOs, with offices in over 100 countries. It is the leading inter-governmental organization in this field and works closely with governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental partners to promote international cooperation on migration issues, to assist in the search for practical solutions to migration problems and to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants in need.
