World Food Day 2010, ‘United against Hunger’
World Food Day proclaimed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is celebrated on 16th October. The Italian Ministry of the Interior mobilizes to help sign a petition to end hunger in the world
‘1billionhungry’ is a project launched by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the occasion of World Food Day 2010, celebrated on 16th October. It aims at collecting one million signatures by the end of the current month for a petition to end hunger in the world.
The main theme of this year’s observance, in its ninth edition, is ‘United against hunger’, chosen to recognize the efforts made in the fight against world hunger at national, regional and international levels.
A real important contribution is given by the Italian Ministry of the Interior that is going to support this initiative through the involvement of its central and local offices, especially prefectures. The aim is raising awareness of the importance of collecting signatures by achieving widest dissemination. The online petition can be signed by clicking www.1billionhungry.org.
The Italian official celebrations will be held until the end of December. Apart from the three UN agencies sharing a common approach to reducing hunger and poverty, namely the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP), several Italian State administrations and public/ private organisations will also be involved.
