'Ndrangheta: 300 people arrested by Italian police and Carabinieri in Calabria and Northern Italy in a huge blitz

Millions of euros worth of property and other assets have been seized. Maroni: the most important operation in recent years

The biggest ever operation against the ‘Ndrangheta has been staged today by the Italian police and Carabinieri.
A huge blitz against this criminal organisation has been carried out by the officers early this morning leading to the arrest of 300 people in different areas of the country on suspicion of crimes including murder, money laundering and belonging to a criminal organisation.
The operation called ‘Il crimine’ (the crime) involved the seizure of millions of euros worth of property and other assets, including money, weapons and drugs.

Anti-mafia investigators in Reggio Calabria and Milan have for a long time investigated into the infiltration of both businesses and political and administrative environments in northern Italy by the country's most powerful mafia.

The most prominent ‘Ndrangheta families in Reggio Calabria, Vibo Valentia and Crotone were hit together with their affiliated members in other regions and abroad. Investigators say those having the hegemony in the capital city of Calabria, on the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seashores have been dismantled. Families involved are: San Luca-based Pelle family,  Siderno-based Commiso family, Gioiosa Jonica-based Acquino-Coluccio and Mazzaferro families, Rosarno-based Pesce-Balocco and Oppedisano families, Sinopoli-based Alvaro family, Polistena-based Longo family and Melito Porto Salvo-based Iamonte family.
