Fight against illegal immigration 

ImmigrantsAction to combat illegal immigration involves development and adoption of measures and initiatives targeting immigration dynamics.
The Central Directorate for Immigration and Border Police was set up in 2002. Its mission focuses on developing innovative strategies to counter illegal immigration and dealing with any issue arising from the presence of foreign nationals on the national territory.

The Directorate is in charge of gathering and analysing information on measures taken to monitor, prevent and fight against illegal immigration by sea. It is also tasked with the coordination of operations carried out by the Italian Navy, police forces and harbour offices.
Handling of immigrants leaving on the national territory is entrusted to the immigration centres falling within the responsibility of the Department for Civil Liberties and Immigration. 

Fight against drug use and trafficking

Illegal drugsFight against drug use and trafficking requires coordination and planning of police forces. It involves promoting both prevention and repression initiatives and action against illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

Fight against illicit drugs trafficking is closely linked to that against international organised crime on account of the high level of capability, mobility and adaptability of its activities.

Illicit drugs trafficking is an extremely complex phenomenon, with international dimensions and influenced by a great number of social, economic, cultural and criminal factors.

This activity is entrusted to the Central Directorate for Antidrug Services, an interagency organization staffed with personnel, in equal numbers, from the State police, Arma dei Carabinieri and Financial and customs police. The Directorate is responsible for the enforcement of directives issued by the Minister of Interior concerning coordination and planning of activities.

Transport and telecommunication security

Their broad experience and high skills, constantly upgraded by specific training courses, play a key role in safeguarding institutions and citizens.

Road Police, Railway Police, Postal and Communications Police and Special Units are entrusted with this specific task. 

Telematic resources at their disposal enable them to offer a timely and constantly updated information service so as to satisfy the needs of both individuals and the entire community.

Sporting events security

Football stadiumSporting events security is ensured by preventing and repressing phenomena of violence and intolerance, especially during football matches. The aim is to guarantee not only supporters’ safety, but also that of law enforcement officers, firemen and civilians.
The National Observatory on Sports Events, a body entrusted with advisory function, was set up in 1999 to specifically enforce the provisions and measures envisaged by the relevant legislation.

The National Observatory is tasked with: monitoring this phenomenon, establishing risk levels of events, endorsing guidelines to safety in sports facilities, promoting prevention initiatives, identifying measures to ensure that competitions are run regularly and public is safe, drafting an annual report on trends shown by phenomena of violence and intolerance at sports events.

The Observatory is made up of representatives from police forces, institutions directly or indirectly involved in football’s world (Federcalcio, Coni, Lega professionisti e dilettanti) and transport agencies (Trenitalia). 

 

Special security agreements (‘Patti per la sicurezza’) 

It is a solidarity instrument aimed at identifying more appropriate solutions to combat urban crime through a joint action by several institutions at different levels, each acting within the limits of their mandate.
These agreements envisage specific actions to cope with the Roma people emergency, measures to fight against counterfeiting and piracy, exploitation of prostitution, unauthorized trading, etc. They also provide for both a reorganisation of police facilities and  extended functions of proximity police.
