Association of municipalities
An association of municipalities is a local authority made up of two or more municipalities, generally neighbouring each other to jointly fulfil some specific functions. Set up on a permanent basis, it is regulated by its own statute adopted by town councils of member municipalities in pursuance of principles established by constitutional, European, national and regional laws.
According to its statute, an association of municipalities is in charge of promoting the integration of administrative services and ensuring the coordination of territory development policies with a view to improving quality standards of services for citizens through the implementation of corresponding scale economies.
Principles laid down in municipal legislation apply to associations of municipalities. Their bodies are required to be made up of members of participating municipalities in order to guarantee minority representations.
