Biography of Prefect Angela Pria
She was born in Rome on June 11 1953, she is married and has two sons. She graduated in law on 16 February 1977 at the University of Rome. She is qualified to practise law.
In 1979 she passed a competitive examination to become a “Consigliere di Prefettura” (Councillor in the Prefecture); she was promoted to “Viceprefetto ispettore” (Vice-prefect inspector) on January 1 1989 and “Viceprefetto” (Vice-prefect) in 1994. She worked in the Directorate General for overall administration and personnel affairs. In 1980 she took part in operations to rescue and aid the population affected by the earthquake in Irpinia.
In 1981 she served, out of the Prefects’ ranks, within the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, for the Civil Protection Minister. She subsequently worked at the High School for the Administration of Internal Affairs and in 1986 she served in the Central Bureau for Legislative Affairs and International Relations.
In February 1987 she was assigned, as “Vice Consigliere Ministeriale Aggiunto” (Associate Ministerial Vice –Councillor) to the Secretariat of the Head of the Police where she first dealt with the organization of the Central and Local Bureaux of the State Police, then with trade unions and labour affairs. In September 1993 she was moved to the Cabinet of the Minister of the Interior and from May 1994 to June 1995 she was entrusted with the task of Head of the Ministry of the Interior’s Secretariat.
She was assigned again to the Directorate General for overall administration and personnel affairs as Head of the organization bureau.
On June 12 2001, in her capacity as “Vice-prefect”, she took on the task of Head of Cabinet of the Minister of Labour and Social Policies, out of the Prefects’ ranks. In June 2003 she was appointed “Prefect”. In June 2006 she served again, within the Prefects’ ranks, as “Ispettore generale di amministrazione” (General Inspector of administration). In January 2007 she became Central Director for Immigration and Border Police within the Department for Public Security. On June 19 2008 she was appointed Head of the Department for Internal and Territorial Affairs.
During her career she has performed tasks in several bodies:
Government representative on the Board of Directors of the International Labour Office (ILO);
“Committee for high technical and political direction with regard to public and private employment”;
“Government Committee Italy – China”;
“ILO’s advisory three-party Committee;
“Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Executive Board”.
She has attended several conferences and workshops:
“First National Conference on directorship in state administration”;
“Some considerations with regard to minors labour”;
“Migrations: a challenge for EU, international and national law”;
“Opportunities for teenagers and youngsters in Africa”;
“Integration and immigration”;
“Integrated security in maritime areas”;
“Border control and management of migratory flows”;
“Immigration and the criminal system”.
She has gained a wealth of experience in the field of training, starting from University, where she collaborated with the holder of the Civil Law Chair in “La Sapienza” Law Faculty in Rome and, subsequently, in the civil service.
She was appointed Head of the Department for Civil Liberties and Immigration starting from June 3 2010.
